This is not really a huge surprise, but its pretty impressive. Final Fantasy XIII has broken all records in Japan selling over a million copies in the first day! It has reached 1,501,000 sold units by the end of the first week. Which is more than Metal Gear Solid sold up until now which was a very popular game and the best-seller up until Final Fantasy XIII.

This, of course, increased the sales of the PS3 itself. The sales double in the last week or so, going from 75k to 237 units! This is very impressive and a huge successes for Sony!
